Structural Steel Design & Stability

Date   :              11 July 2019 (Thurs)

Time   :              8.45am – 4.00pm

Venue:              IEM Penang Secretariat

Synopsis:

The objective of this short course is to provide participants with basic knowledge of structural steelwork design using Eurocode 3 BS EN 1993-1-1:2000. The course covers the general behaviour of the structural systems, design of steel beams and columns, connections and the overall frame stability.

A structure is designed to fulfil two basic criteria i.e. strength and stiffness, by which the stability of the structure can be achieved.   A comprehensive discussion on stability is too wide, therefore the seminar will highlight briefly the basic concept of each of the element of stability problem such as axial, shear, lateral torsional and local buckling, and instability due to fatigue problem.  This applies to common types of structural steel elements i.e. beam, column, and plate.  For the connections, the course cover beam to column connection, focusing on design of simple construction, in which the connections between members are assumed as incapable of transmitting moments. Concept in the design of rigid or moment-resistant beam to column connections will, however, be briefly discussed.

Apart from the design of steel structures, the use of cold-formed steel for structural members will also be highlighted. Cold-formed steel sections which are commonly used as secondary steelwork such as roof purlins, have now being applied for primary load-bearing elements in light steel frames such as roof trusses and framed walls. Due to the thinness of the section, the design of cold-formed steel is different from the hot-rolled steel. This will be discussed in this course.  Throughout the course, relevant clauses in the design codes for hot-rolled and cold-formed steel will be explained.

About the Speaker

Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd Hanim Osman is a senior fellow at the Forensic Engineering Centre (FEC), School of Civil Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Skudai, Johor.

Besides teaching and supervision as the core responsibilities, he is active in research and consultancies in specialized areas related to civil engineering and construction, particularly concrete and structural steel analysis, design, assessment, and structural failure investigation. He is also a senior fellow member of Civil Engineering Testing Unit (CETU), a laboratory with ISO 17025 accreditation. His current research interest is structural forensic engineering and building condition assessment.

Dr. Mohd Hanim holds a B.Eng. (Civil)(Hon.) degree from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (1985), M.Sc. (Structural Eng.) from University of Surrey (1987), and Ph.D (Structural Eng.) from University of Wales at Cardiff, United Kingdom (1996). He is a member of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia and a Professional Engineer with Board of Engineers, Malaysia.
