Technical Talk: Safe Driving: Prevention Not Reaction!
Date : 17th June 2019 (Monday)
Time : 06:00pm – 08:00pm
Venue : IEM Penang Secretariat

Synopsis
Although for many of us, getting behind the wheel is an everyday occurrence, unintentional accidents, such
as road traffic crashes, are one of the leading causes of deaths globally as well as in Malaysia. Nearly 1.3
million people were killed every year due to the road crash, with 20–50 million sustaining non-fatal injuries.
In fact, 90% of the fatalities occurred in low and medium income countries which only have 54% of the world’s
registered vehicles. It has cost most countries 3% of their GDP. Without any sustained action, road traffic
crashes are predicted to become the 7th leading cause of death by 2030. With such a grave risk, motorists
should take every precaution possible to help prevent an accident.
Although the actions of others on the road are uncontrollable which contribute about 93% of the road traffic
crashes, you can control how you operate your vehicle. And defensive driving is arguably one of the best
ways to do that. A defensive driver can reduce the risk and keep people safer on the road. Thus, this technical
talk will highlight the main causes of road crashes with regards to human factors especially in Malaysia as
well as the concept of defensive driving.
