Half-Day Seminar on: Understanding Fire Detection
Date: 28 June 2019 (Fri)
Time: 8.30am – 12.30pm
Venue: IEM Penang Secretariat
Synopsis
Fire is a chemical reaction that requires three elements to be present for the reaction to take place and
continue. The three elements are:
1. Heat, or an ignition source.
2. Fuel
3. Oxygen
“These three elements typically are referred to as the “fire triangle.” Fire is the result of the reaction between
the fuel and oxygen in the air. Scientists developed the concept of a fire triangle to aid in understanding of the
cause of fires and how they can be prevented and extinguished. Heat, fuel and oxygen must combine in a
precise way for a fire to start and continue to burn. If one element of the fire triangle is not present or removed,
fire will not start or, if already burning, will extinguish.
This presentation will FOCUS on the organization objectives (NFPA1600) in implementing fire detection and
alarm system. Different detectors will behave and respond differently based on the type of detectors used.
Detectors are designed based on product standards (BOMBA, EN54, UL, FM) and how these detectors are
installed, tested and maintenance (NFPA72, EN54-14, BS5839-1 or etc.) has different characteristic between
product standards and installation standards.
By the end of this presentation the audience should have the knowledge,
1. to lead better understanding by knowing whether the type of detectors used will able to meet one or all of the objectives in their design.
2. Special Detectors used to achieve its objectives
3. Control Units (Fire Alarm System)
4. Objective of the output from control units (NFPA 1600)
- Pre-alarm/ Notification and Control
- System Integration, Integration at high level compared to conventional integration.
