Synopsis
To share with participants on the basic principle and theory of a centrifugal pump. To also showcase the various
types and applications of pumps in the market.
An introduction into the principles of the modern centrifugal pump design, with understanding on the affinity
laws and how to optimize or adjust the pump performances. Overview of the impact of pump designs on pump
efficiency values and power consumptions. A brief explanation on the various pump design standards and the
selection guideline.
To show and explain the various different pump terminology and pump types by providing pictures of actual
units, site installations and service videos. How engineers decide on the suitable pump types to use for an
application? What are the major and minor considerations for a pump selection?
TARGET PARTICIPANTS
- Field Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, Chartered Engineer (IR), C&S Engineer who involve in plumbing design
& HVAC Design Engineer.

Speakers’ Profile
1) Ir. Ooi Boon Bow @ Ng Boon Seong PJK FIEM, Hon MAFEO, PEPC, ACPE, SPAN “QP”
Ir. Ooi Boon Bow, graduated from the University of Auckland (New Zealand) on
year 1972 with Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering. Ir. Ooi is the Director of TES
Avenue Sdn. Bhd., a fellow of IEM, internal Auditor, and renowned former Chairman
of The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM-Penang/ IEM-Northern Branch) With
an extensive international management experience as a Consulting Mechanical
Engineer spanning 46 years since 1972;
Some of Ir. Ooi’s illustrious engineering career achievements include high-profile appointments as ‘General
Manager’ (Ranhill Bersekutu Penang), ‘Engineering and Service Manager’ (Astoria) and ‘M&E Section Head’ for
the Penas Group.
Some of Ir. Ooi’s accomplishments include the success of widespread high impact global projects for ‘Rankine
and Hill’ in New Zealand and Malaysia. Ir. Ooi, a certified ‘Professional Engineer with Practicing Certificate’
with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), a pro-active ‘Fellow’ of IEM complemented by 20 years as
Corporate Member of the ‘American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers’; was also
the dynamic State Representative on the ‘Association of Consulting Engineers Council.
For his much appreciated leadership and contributions towards excellence in engineering, society
enhancement and nation development; the Government and Engineering Fraternity bestowed upon Ir. Ooi
Boon Bow the illustrious Pingat Jasa Kebaktian (PJK) Award (2009), the ‘ASEAN Federation of Engineering
Organisations (AFEO)’s Honorary Membership Award’(2015), ASEAN Chartered Professional Engineer (2019)
& a Qualified Person of National Water Service Commission (SPAN), Malaysia.(2019).
2) Mr Danny Sew Chang Yew, graduated from Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang in 2007 with a B. Eng in
Mechanical Engineering. He started his career with Grundfos Pumps Malaysia as a sales & application engineer
and has remained in the pump industry in various positions for the past 12 years. He is currently the Segment
Manager (Pumps & Engineering Project) in NTK Industrial Sdn. Bhd., leading the sales and application division
of Grundfos pumps and related products for the Industrial, HVAC and Water Distribution markets.
