ONLINE TECHNICAL TALK:
Practical Design of Stone Columns
Date : 26 Jan 2021 (Tues)
Time : 6:30pm – 8:30pm
Venue : Online Platform
Details of Online Login ID will be provided 2 days before the Talk
Synopsis
Stone column is an effective ground improvement technique used to reduce settlement and increase bearing capacity of soils. Small column groups are used to support smaller foundation with smaller loadings while large column groups are used to support wide-spread loading such as embankment and mat foundation.
Due to different geometries of foundations, the failure modes of stone columns are different as the result of complex load sharing and strain compatibility between foundation, stone columns and the surrounding soils. In view of that, few methods are introduced for the practical design of small and large column groups particularly in estimating the consolidation settlements of stone columns. The design methods consider the most influencing factors such as area replacement ratio, column’s length, loading and the friction angle of column’s material.
Biodata of Speaker
Dr. Ng Kok Shien
Dr. Ng Kok Shien is currently a senior lecturer in Faculty of Civil Engineering, Universiti Teknologi MARA since 2006. He completed his PhD at National University of Singapore (2013) with the research topic on floating stone columns. He received his BSc of Civil Engineering (2003) and MEng of Civil- Geotechnical degree (2005) from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. His research interests in geotechnical engineering are in the areas of numerical modelling, ground improvement, forensic engineering and slope engineering. He has published more than 40 technical papers in journal and conference proceedings.
Dr Ng has been awarded best paper and best presenter for couple of times in international conference. For a few years before he joined UiTM, he worked as an engineer in a ground improvement specialist company, Keller (M) Sdn. Bhd. He has also completed a few consultancy projects in Malaysia.
