Synopsis:
The Waste Transfer Stations in Penang State are located at both Seberang Perai (using land mode) and Batu Maung (using barge transfer) respectively. At year 2011, due to constraint in land availability, the Ampang Jajar Transfer Station was used to serve both Mainland and Penang Island at the capacity of 1100 tons per day, running 24 hour shifts 7 days a week. Subsequently, plans were made for MBPP to have Waste Transfer Station at Batu Maung, Penang Island to reduce Ampang Jajar Transfer Station operating load.
The Penang waste transfer station is designed so that Waste-To-Energy can be implemented after the right waste to energy, i.e. biogas-technology, has been sourced. Biogas can be produced from waste fractions such as agricultural waste, manure, sewage sludge, green waste and food waste. These waste fractions can be used as resources, resulting in further costs savings and in a certain percentage of waste being diverted from the landfill.
Penang Waste Transfer Station is used to manage solid waste from the point of generation to final disposal, incorporating recover, recycle, reuse, compact, transfer and dispose. It receives and weighs incoming waste segregation of domestic and non-domestic waste. Then, it unloads the domestic waste into silo before compaction is carried out. Silos with domestic waste is transferred onto the prime movers via the station truck. Finally, prime movers will transfer the laden silos to Pulau Burong landfill for final disposal.
