Mr. Yee is also very active in promoting the knowledge of geotechnical engineering. He has delivered a few keynote lectures in various conferences across the Asia region. Currently he holds 3 patents on geosynthetics.

Synopsis of the topic

Mechanical stabilisation of soil involves the use of high tensile modulus geosynthetics with good soil interaction properties to improve the performance of engineered soil structures e.g. slopes, embankments, subgrade foundations, etc. The high tensile modulus geosynthetics mobilise tensile resistance at low strains to limit tensile straining of the soil to maintain stability. The development of high tensile modulus geosynthetics have revolutionised geotechnical engineering as it have been used to construct slopes at very steep angles; lead to the development of reinforced soil retaining walls that can be constructed higher and with many different aesthetical fascia; allowed embankments, highway pavements and railroads to be constructed over difficult soil subgrades and foundations.

Drainage geosynthetics are also incorporated in engineered soil structures for moisture management. More recently, high tensile modulus geosynthetics with enhanced soil moisture wicking capability have been used to stabilise roads over moisture sensitive subgrades e.g. frost boil grounds and subgrades with expansive soils as well as marginal soils or soils that have higher percentage of fine-grained materials. Besides mechanical stabilisation, a primary objective of the high tensile modulus geosynthetics with enhanced soil moisture wicking capability is to prevent soil saturation during sustained rainfall and the secondary objective is to lower the soil moisture content back to normal levels as quickly as possible after sustained rainfall.

The presentation will cover the geotechnical principles of soil improvement through mechanical stabilisation and moisture management; applications of geosynthetics to improve the stability of engineered soil structures through mechanical stabilisation, subsurface drainage and soil moisture wicking functions; and case studies.

Session 4             : Hill Site Developments – Case Studies

By                         : Ir. Yau Ann Nian, DJN, PJK

Speaker’s Profile

Ir. Yau graduated with a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from Cheng Kung University, Taiwan in 1980 and obtained his  Part II Certificate in Civil Engineering from the Engineering Council (United Kingdom) in 1992. Ir. Yau has 39 years of working experience in Civil Engineering. Ir. Yau is currently the Chairman of IEM (Penang Branch). He also a registered Professional Engineer (Malaysia), a Corporate Member of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia and an Associate Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (United Kingdom) and Member of Malaysian Geotechnical Society (MMGS), a Qualified Geotechnical Engineer and Geotechnical Checker accepted by the Penang High Risk Development Area Committee,  Basement Projects under Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang and Geotechnical Engineer of the team on Guidelines of Hill Land Development for Jabatan Perancang Bandar Dan Desa (JPBD), Ir. Yau is also one of the members of IEM Penang’s Standing Committee for Geotechnical, Civil and Structural.

Synopsis of the topic

There has been a significant increase in hill site developments over the past 30 years in Penang Island. This is especially due to the scarcity of flat land and the attraction of the aesthetic quality of the scenery and the unique environmental qualities that come with developing on the hills.  Hill site developments often cause man-made alternations to the landscape, and the safety of properties and the stability of slopes on hill site developments are often serious topics of discussion and often with public objections and condemnations against hill side developments. The irony is that hill sites can be safely and beneficially developed with proper planning, design, construction control and maintenance. Ir. Yau’s talk will highlight the practical concerns on hill site development in Penang Island, including the planning of hill site development, the design considerations, stability checks on hill slopes, methods of strengthening hill slopes, construction control and slope maintenance.

Session 5             : i.) Offshore Bored Piling using Kelly Drilling for

                                   the HKZMB &

ii) Deep Basements in soft Clays supported by Diaphragm Wall or

       Secant Pile Wall

By                         : Mr. Thomas Domanski

 Speaker’s Profile

Mr. Thomas graduated with Master of Civil Engineering majoring in Geotechnical Works and Soil Mechanics in 1983 at the Technical University Braunschweig, Germany. He currently is the Regional Director SEA Pacific of Bauer Spezialtiefbau GmbH responsible for Bauer’s operations in Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines and Australia. He has over 35 years of experience in Geotechnical Works and Civil Engineering. He is also the Managing Director of Bauer (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.

Since 1990, he was overall in charge of several hundreds of Projects in Malaysia and SEA Pacific. He was instrumental in developing new drilling and grouting techniques for Limestone and Granite Rock in Malaysia, developed ground improvement techniques for the region such as compaction grouting, stone columns, wet soil mixing techniques and Full Displacement Columns.

He formed the material division of Bauer in SEA Pacific in Malaysia with which he is developing new stabilization slurries like the LTP Polymers used successfully on Mega projects in KL, like the City Towers and Lot L&M of the KLCC. Some of the Projects under his Directorship set new records either in a country or worldwide, like the deep piles for the Lot L&M, KLCC with a length of up to 150 m, probably the deepest piles in the world. In Malaysia for the MRT Ampang Park Station was the deepest Diaphragm Wall constructed with a panel depth of almost 90 m and a width of 1.5 m. Another Mega Project in which he succeeded to establish Rotary Kelly Drilling for the construction of Bored Piles for probably the largest Offshore Structure in the world was the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge.

Synopsis of the topic

Penang is one of the best developed areas in Malaysia and is on a solid path of economic growth and further development. The PMTP has been given the green light to proceed. This approval will start multibillion-dollar projects which will push the development of the Island to new heights. Projects will include among others the reclamation of new islands, highways, LRT and monorail lines and offshore structures. The new transport network is designed to ease the traffic congestion and will spur the property sector and private developments. The massive construction projects will bring up major challenges for the design and construction of the foundation of the structures and the retaining walls for deep excavations.

Penang has a very difficult geology which consists of very hard rocks (comparable to Singapore and HKG Granite) and in the coastline soft marine clays. In the following presentation 2 Projects which have been completed successfully will be explained which faced similar challenges. The 1st project is the Bored Pile Foundation for the Hong Kong Zhuhai Macau Bridge in the deep-water section where piles with a depth of over 110m were constructed through a thick layer of marine clay and socketed into hard granite using the fast Bauer Rotary Kelly Drilling Technique. The 2nd Project is the new benchmark setting development in Thailand, “One Bangkok”. On a 16.7 ha site in the heart of Bangkok, 5 Grade A Office Towers, 5 luxury Hotels and 3 luxury Condominiums with 4 distinctive Retail Precincts are being built. The entire area has one common deep (4 levels) basement which is retained by a permanent Diaphragm Wall. The sub-ground conditions of the site are typical for Bangkok consisting of a thick layer of soft marine clay over a lamination of sand and hard clay. The Diaphragm Wall and deep Bored Pile Foundation has been completed and the basement excavation is going on.

Session 6             : Application of Distributed Fibre Optic Sensor in Civil Engineering

By                         : Mr. Chong Mun Fai

Speaker’s Profile

Mr. Chong Mun Fai is a Civil Engineer who has been involved in the foundation testing industry since 1989. He is a certified PDA tester from Pile Driving Contractors Association (USA) with a MASTER level and has been doing foundation and structural testing for the past 30 years. At present he is the Managing Director of Dynamic Pile Testing Sdn Bhd which he set up in 1994. In 2015 he established Smart Sensing Technology Sdn Bhd to facilitate testing using Fibre Optics Sensing. Most of the work are in Malaysia but the services of DPT/SST have spread worldwide. He also often provides training and lectures in foundation testing for IEM and South East Asia, China and Hong Kong. He has co-authored numerous papers in the field of foundation testing and also instrumentations using Distributed Fibre Optics Strain Sensing.

Synopsis of the topic

Recent technological advancement in optical fiber sensing has opened up new ways in measuring strain in civil and geotechnical structures. The distributed sensing, namely Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (BOTDA) is a novel technique of measuring strain in a continuous manner which has a distinct advantage over conventional point-based sensors.

Optical fiber sensors in the form of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) is used to measure localized strain (similar to VWSG) and because its sampling frequency is much higher (up to 5000Hz) we are able to utilize it to measure dynamic strain in structures.

The objective of this presentation is to show an overview of the capabilities of the BOTDA and FBG optical fiber sensors in foundations and structural health monitoring. These instrumentations include tunnels, soil nails, driven and cast-in-situ piles. And also, the application of FBG in bridges in Malaysia.
