This talk will focus on positive displacement compressor in particular rotary compressor which is commonly used in room air-conditioners and refrigerators.  Specially the talk will be focused on research and innovations work by Dr Ooi for the last 30 years while he serves as a faculty member in Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore.

Rotary compressor, rolling piston compressor has been widely used in room air conditioners (RAC).  It is used in more than 90% of today’s RAC, its production rate is closed to 200 million pieces (Japanese Air-conditioning and Refrigeration News, 25 March 2019) a year and has been in double digit growth rate year on year for the past few years.

In this talk, Prof Ooi will begin his talk with a short introduction to NTU, and follow by College of Engineering at NTU, before introducing School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, where he has been a faculty member there for the past 30 years.

The compressor research work carried out at NTU and the innovations by his team will then be presented.
