Synopsis

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration unveiled humankind’s first ever image of a black hole in April 2019, observed in the centre of the nearby galaxy M87. In this talk, Dr. Kevin Koay will describe how the team harnessed a global network of sub-mm wavelength telescopes to observe this object, as well as the considerable amounts of data processing and imaging efforts that went into producing the final iconic image.

He will also talk about his involvement in the ongoing expansion of the EHT through the construction and commissioning of the Greenland Telescope, the first such observatory to be built in the Arctic.

Biodata of Speaker

Dr. Kevin Koay Jun Yi is from Penang and is an alumni of Penang Free School. He obtained his B.Eng (Hons) in Electronics Engineering and M.Eng. Sc. from MMU in 2004 and 2008 respectively. He obtained his PhD in astrophysics from Curtin University, Australia in 2013, after which he spent three years as a postdoctoral researcher at the Dark Cosmology Centre and Niels Bohr Institute of the University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

Dr. Kevin Koay was (and still is) a member of the team of international scientists from the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration that made the historic record of capturing the first image of a black hole. It was an astronomical achievement that made waves worldwide when the news was released in April 2019, and won the 2020 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. The 39-year-old scientist got involved in the EHT project after joining the Taiwan-based Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics (ASIAA) in 2016 as a Postdoctoral Fellow, where he now works as a support astronomer.
