Synopsis
Miniaturization of electronics, optical and telecommunication hardware demands equally sophisticated production, testing and measurement equipment. It would be a costly setback if production yield is compromised due to excessive vibration of the production floor. It is therefore common for sensitive equipment to have vibration serviceability requirements for successful operation.
This presentation first introduces generic vibration criteria, published by SPIE in 1991, that are conveniently used to classify vibration levels and their relevance to different types of vibration sensitive equipment. Audience will be introduced to the suitable hardware and software needed to measure, acquire, process and assess the vibration levels. The fundamentals of dynamic response of engineering structures and the common types of vibration sources will then be reviewed. The speaker will also discuss the use of finite element analysis (FEA), a highly valuable design and engineering tool, to study the resonance and dynamic response of the building subjected to different vibrational excitations, by means of modal, harmonic, transient analyses.
Finally, the challenges and limitations for addressing vibration serviceability using current approach are deliberated.
Ir Dr Tang Kok Cheong (KC)
After receiving his 1st Class BEng in Aeronautical Engineering (1994) and PhD in Mechanical Engineering (1998) from the University of Salford, UK, he worked as a consultant for an engineering consultancy firm south of London, UK, for over 10 years.
He relocated back to Malaysia in 2010 and joined a regional technical training company before founding his own company in 2013 to offer finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and vibration control engineering services to clients in the UK and South East Asia.
As a professional engineer and an engineering simulation specialist, he has undertaken and managed over 100 engineering consultancy projects for clients in oil and gas, biomedical, environment and energy, electrical and electronics, defence, nuclear and other industries.
He has also delivered over 100 standard and customised FEA and CFD training courses in the UK over his engineering career.
