Synopsis

Data science is a complex and often dull subject. Communicating data to technical and lay-person requires different strategies, and often, it is hard to gauge the level of detail that needs to be presented. Therefore, a well-structured narrative is important to convey the insights to the desired audience. However, weaving an interesting an engaging story based on numbers and graphs is not easy. Data storytelling is more than just creating the best-looking graphs, or the perfect excel sheet. It is about taking the insights from data, and transforming it into a series of plots, using the same tools and frameworks that makes a story engaging. After attending this short workshop, you should be able to:

 

Speaker Profile

Dr Ivan Ling Ting Yang

Dr Ivan Ling received his Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical and Electronic) from Swinburne University of technology and has recently completed his PhD from the University of Southampton. He is currently an assistant professor at the University of Southampton Malaysia. He is the faculty champion for 3 Minute Thesis competition at the Faculty of Engineering and Environment, University of Southampton (UK) in 2018, and the national champion for IET Present Around the World Malaysia in 2012.

Ivan is an avid science communicator and is involved in various research outreach programs within Malaysia and the UK. Ivan’s research interest centers around the development of sensors for environmental and pollution monitoring, as well as sustainable technologies to reduce such pollutions. He is also the recipient of the 2019 IET-Greenpeace Global Challenge Award.
