Synopsis
Topic 1: Timber as Construction Material – Perception and Challenges
Tropical hardwood timber was very popular during pre-independence period. It was popular not only in housing but also in the construction of castles and other public structures such as schools and government office buildings.
This is logical with the abundance of supplies from the natural forests that getting suitable and appropriate species for its use not a problem at all. Durable and large size of timber simply flooded the market.
However, as Malaysia continues to grow after the war, choice of construction materials becomes wider with the introduction of masonry, concrete and steel. Timber’s popularity was reduced and it is no longer the people’s choice. Timber has become less superior and other material began dominating the market.
This paper is to share some in-sights from the perspective of a engineer/designer/architect to re-think tropical hardwood timber and how to reverse the trend in the construction industry.
Even so, the technology did not expand into the mainstream local construction industry. Unlike in the Europe/West, buildings in Malaysia was commonly built in timber due to various reasons. However, as the cost escalates ever since, masonry construction has become the choice of many.
Perception that timber is the right choice has to be effectively channelled to the specifiers, engineers, building contractors, professionals, etc. Timber should not be seen as what it was in the past but as a new engineered material, such as glulam and CLT which provides limitless advantages and benefits to the users.
Biodata of Speaker
1st Speaker: Pn. Hamidah Abdullah
A Wood Technology graduate from Faculty of Applied Sciences, Universiti Teknologi Mara, Malaysia in year 1992, Pn Hamidah has accumulated over 28 years of experience working in the Council, where she is devoted to the development of the Malaysian timber industry.
A pioneer employee at Malaysia Timber Council (MTC), Pn Hamidah has valuable knowledge and experiences with regard to enhancing use of timber in construction sector and promoting glulam as one of the materials for building component. Among her core duties include proposing strategies to the Council for the growth of the timber industry.
She has substantial experience in organising seminars, conferences and has successfully initiated the Malaysian Wood Awards 2017, a premier competition aimed to encourage wider use of Malaysian timbers in the built environment. She is one of the key representatives for the industry when communicating with all levels of governments, trade associations, furniture industry, interior design industry and architects in the country. Respected by peers for commitment to excellence, long-term vision, and demonstrated strong cross-functional team leadership and influencing ability.
Topic 2: Development of Malaysia Standard (MS) for Timber Structures
Malaysian Standard MS 544 is categorised as a Code of practice for Structural Use of Timber. This code provides guidance on the structural use of timber for construction industry. It gives recommendations for the structural use of the Malaysian hardwood and softwood timber species such as solid timber, glued laminated timber and timber panel product which are in the group of engineered timber. It contains recommendations on quality, grade stresses and modification factors applicable to these timbers when used as simple members, or as parts of built-up components, or as parts of structures integrating with other materials.
This category of standard also provides recommendations for the design of connectors and glued joints. Moreover, it provides recommendations for a method of test to assess the adequacy of structural assemblies including general advice on workmanship, various treatments which can be applied, inspection and maintenance. However, it is not an intention to deal broadly with all aspects of timber construction particularly to cover well tried and traditional methods of timber construction which have been employed successfully over a long period of time.
Biodata of Speaker
2nd Speaker: Prof. Dr. Badorul Hisham Abu Bakar
Prof. Dr. Badorul graduated from Universiti Sains Malaysia with Bachelor of Eng. (Hons) in year 1993, University of Leeds with Master of Science (Con. & Design. Cons.) in year 1994 and Doctor of Philosophy (Masonry Structures) in year 1998. He has 29 years of working experience comprising of quantity surveying work, laboratory work, civil and structural engineering work.
Currently, Prof. Dr. Badorul is a Professor of Structural Engineering at Universiti Sains Malaysia. His main research areas are investigation on properties of fired clay bricks for masonry structures, deformation of timber structures for structural application and development of MS 544, usage of rice husk ash in fired clay bricks, usage of waste materials in construction materials.
