Half Day Seminar [CLOSED]: Photovoltaic Technology & Sharing Experience on NEM Solar PV (RE) Renewable Energy
Half Day Seminar
Photovoltaic Technology & Sharing Experience on NEM Solar PV (RE) Renewable Energy
Date: 15 Aug 2020 (Sat)
Time: 8.30am – 1.30pm
Venue: Bayview Hotel, Farquhar Street, Penang
Sri Mas Ballroom, Level 4
Synopsis
Topic 1: “Photovoltaic Technology”
Synopsis: Photovoltaic (PV) is the process of converting sunlight into electricity by solar cells. Today, PV is rapidly growing and becoming increasingly important renewable energy alternative to conventional fossil fuel electricity generation. In this talk, introduction to PV, physics of PV cell and types of available PV technologies will be covered. Besides, manufacturing of PV cells and emerging PV technologies will also be discussed.
Biodata of Speaker 1
Dr. Mohd Zamir bin Parkhuruddin
Dr. Mohd Zamir bin Pakhuruddin graduated with BEng of Electrical Engineering from University of Sheffield, United Kingdom. Upon graduation, he spent about 7.5 years in industry as a Senior Engineer of Photolithography and Sputtering (R&D) in SilTerra and Fuji Electric respectively. In 2009, he pursued his studies in MSc of Physics (Research Mode) at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), on silicon thin-film solar cells on flexible substrate.
In 2012, he pursued his PhD in Photovoltaics Engineering at University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia, where he worked on the development of light-trapping schemes in laser-crystallised silicon thin-film solar cells on glass. He is currently a Senior Lecturer at School of Physics, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). His expertise is in photovoltaic materials and devices (PVMD), and solar PV technologies. He has published several research papers in the field and also active in reviewing manuscripts for high-impact journals. He is also a member of Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM).
Topic 2: Sharing Experience on NEM Solar PV (RE) Renewable Energy
(Renewable Energy Act 2011 [28th April])
NEM - Renewable Energy Act 2015 (Act A1501) [Oct. 2016]
Abstract: Configuration an optimized effective Solar PV RE system requires the consideration of a wide range of engineering, environmental, and economics factors. Proven experiences and broad capabilities entail the good selection and configuration of effective Solar PV RE system with shortest ROI. Solar PV RE is an environmental responsibility makes today’s exciting visions turn into reality tomorrow.
This seminar gives an overview of the SEDA NEM (Net Energy Metering) Solar PV, Solar PV brief history & system technologies that have been successfully configured, applied and proven for good investment.
It also gives necessary Solar PV engineering background knowledge for the selection of the proper system for investment. Providing Answers to FAQs on Solar PV System. In general, it’s essential to know the system before venturing. Otherwise, the equipment investment may turn out to be a long ROI for owner.
Keywords: configuration, optimize, NEM, solar PV, mono & multi/poly crystalline,
transformerless inverter, potential problems, economics.

Ir. Chau Hoo Wan
Ir. Chau Hoo Wan graduated with MSc. Hons (1988-1990) & BSc. Hons (1986-1988) from South Dakota State University (SDSU), U.S.A. major in Power Electronics Engineering in post-graduate school & double major in Electrical/Electronic Engineering & Thermo Dynamic Mechanical Engineering in undergraduate school. He was a SDSU’s scholarship holder & All-American Deans’ List recipient in 1988, 1989 & 1990. Solar PV was one of his undergraduate R&D works in SDSU while he worked as RA & Instructor in SDSU in those early years.
He is an accredited APEC Engineer, ASEAN Engineer & Professional Engineer (PEPC), SEDA GCPV competency, MGBC GBIF, ST PQA & REEM etc. Author for several published engineering papers in air pollution control system innovation. Currently, he is a chief engineer in his firm providing various specialized engineering services to local heavy industries. Upon launching the SEDA RE Act 2011, he has utilizing his long-forgotten knowledge & started to invest/configure high efficiency Solar PV system with good proven ROI.
