IEM Penang Branch is collaborating with the School of Civil Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia and Forensic Structural Engineering Team (ForSET)to organize the following technical talk on “Sound, Ultrasound & Infrasound of Acostic Emission (AE) in Structural Health Monitoring” by Associate Professor Ir Dr Norazura Muhamad Bunnori, Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Malaya.  This is admission free technical talk (FOR IEM MEMBERS ONLY)

Synopsis

Deterioration of concrete bridges and other concrete structures caused by environmental exposure is a severe global problem. Serious deterioration of the civil engineering infrastructure has encouraged structural monitoring of the integrity of structural systems. Early detection of damage is of special concern for civil engineering structures. If not identified in time, damage may have serious consequences, both safety related and economic.

Monitoring the structural health condition at regular interval can enable the degradation of structural components and provide this information to the operator or users of the structure quickly and comprehensively. Apart from that, monitoring of the structural health condition also will allow structural degradation to be identified early prior to local failure, able to prevent system failure and able to help in reducing the maintenance costs.

The introduction of health monitoring techniques using Non-Destructive Technique (NDT) are beneficial as they improve the confidence with which structural performance is assessed and predicted; hence optimize resources used for bridge inspection, maintenance and repair. One of the widely used NDT in structural health monitoring is Acoustic Emission (AE) that deals with the study of sound, ultrasound and infrasound. AE is used as a health monitoring tool to detect, identify, locate and quantify a variety of damage mechanisms. In addition, the AE technique does not interfere with the users of the structure such as traffic and pedestrians and shows great potential for monitoring and assessing the health condition of structures.

Biodata of Speaker

Associate Professor Ir Dr Norazura Muhamad Bunnori

Norazura Muhamad Bunnori (PhD) has been involved in Acoustic Emission technique since 2004 while she is pursuing her PhD study at Cardiff University, Wales, UK. She was graduated from Cardiff University in 2008 and continues with the AE research area in Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Malaysia. After 10 years with USM she is currently working as a lecturer in Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Malaya (UM), Kuala Lumpur since December 2018. The aim is to continue the AE especially in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) research area and to discover more in this potential area. The passion towards AE is deep and she believes that there are a great number of information can be studied and discovered with this tool.
