 TECHNICAL VISIT

Pejabat Pengurusan Lembangan Sungai Muda & Sg. Muda Barrage

Synopsis

Sg. Muda barrage is the main artery controlling the inflow and outflow of water from Sungai Muda, 180km long in the south of Kedah. The Sg. Muda barrage is one of the Sungai Muda Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB Sg Muda) components. It was built in 2002 and completed in 2006 with an original contract value of RM150 million.

Sg. Muda barrage plays a significant role in benefiting more than 45,000 residents of Southern Kedah, especially in the districts of Kuala Muda, Baling, Kuala Ketil and Sik, including the residents of Seberang Perai Utara in Pulau Pinang.

Sg. Muda barrage has 14 gates, 12 meters wide and 5.25 meters high, and 1 small boat passage (navigational lock) 7 meters wide.

The primary functions of Sg. Muda barrage:

  1. Flood control
  2. Reservoirs for domestic water supply and irrigation
  3. Control of salt water during high tide

During this Technical Visit, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage Malaysia will share with us in detail about the Sg. Muda Barrage and its operation. We will have a briefing followed by visiting the control room and the Sg. Muda Barrage.
